40 Days Creative - Day 5: Good Morrow!

Yeah, I’m pretty sure Lent was basically created so I could some day draw a dapper robot riding a penny-farthing bicycle. SO I DID!

I also wanted to share a photo of the Big Damn Heroes piece all finished up:

40 Days Creative - Day 3: Big Damn Heroes

For day 3, I decided to appease Ryan and do some Firefly chibi characters. Decided to do the muscle and drew Jayne, Mal, and Zoe. Things I learned while drawing this: tight pants are harder to draw in this style, Zoe wears a lot of belts, I don’t really like drawing guns.

I will probably tweak Mal’s pose and Jayne’s hair prior to inking but, here ya go:

Sorry about the crappy pic. I’ll scan it in it’s final form.

40 Days Creative - Day 2: Look upward

I decided to try my hand at some chibi characters this morning. This is the first time I have ever tried it and I think they came out pretty well. I drew John and Aeryn from Farscape, complete with crazy!John hair. I am pleased with the way he turned out but I will probably tweak Aeryn before I ink/color.

I’ll probably do the rest of the crew eventually and maybe the Firefly people too.

Mad Men

I had a Mad Men marathon today. Why is that show so amazing? The acting is perfect and the writing and the costumes and the attention to detail. Gosh that’s a good show.

Maybe soon I’ll start posting real posts again. Lazy.

Are you kidding me?

I just tweeted about this but now I need to rant a bit too.  EW is reporting that 20th Century Fox is recasting all of the major voice actors for the Comedy Central renewal of Furturama.  That’s right — no Billy West, no Katey Sagal, no John DiMaggio, no Maurice LaMarche, and no Tress MacNeil.

This is the perfect way to bring a show back and doom it in the same move.  After Jericho, I was pretty well convinced that bringing shows back is a bad idea.  The fans fought, got the show renewed and then no one watched.  So of course, it ultimately was a failure of an experiement and all but ensured that it wouldn’t happen again.  But Futurama seemed like an easy win.  It has a strong cult following.  The movies did well.  It has a good home on Comedy Central.  So of course Fox is screwing it up.  I mean, of course.

You won’t find many people who love Futurama more than me and even I don’t know if I can watch this.  Futurama without Billy West alone is not Futurama.  Futurama without all the rest of them is not anything I’m interested in.  Hell, take away Tress MacNeil and Maurice LaMarche and I’m not even sure it still qualifies as a cartoon (Seriously…look those guys up.  They are in every cartoon.)

Part of me kind of believes that this will either turn out to be false or Fox will change their mind and pay them whatever it takes.  Why throw all this money into bringing back a show and essentially give it no chance.  I can’t imagine that getting five different actors to cover all of Billy West’s parts and five different actresses to cover all of Tress MacNeil’s parts could possibly be any cheaper than just keeping Billy and Tress.

The part of me that knows that Fox is an idiot believes this will stand and my beloved show will return as some half-baked ripoff with mediocre sound-alikes.  I’m dying to hear what Matt Groening and David X. Cohen have to say.

Horrible move.

Emmy nominations

Oh man, y’all. I have mixed feelings on these Emmy nominations. On the one hand, there ARE actually some new faces in there. On the other hand, there were some egregious snubs. Here are the big categories:

Outstanding Comedy Series
30 Rock
Entourage
Family Guy
Flight Of The Conchords
How I Met Your Mother
The Office
Weeds
Commentary:  Really?  Family Guy?  Why not just nominate Youtube?  That’s where half of their jokes come from.  I would have been down for a nomination for Family Guy years ago but now I think it’s pretty tired.  Seems like a ploy to get more young people to watch the Emmys.  I’m not really on board with nominations for Entourage or Weeds this year either.  On the other hand…HIMYM!!!!!

Outstanding Drama Series
Big Love
Breaking Bad
Damages
Dexter
House
Lost
Mad Men
Commentary:  This is tough because I agree that ALL of these shows are great.  I maybe would have knocked off House this year (last year was so far superior) and put Battlestar Galactica in it’s spot.  True Blood is also an obvious omission, but I can’t even knock two shows off the list.

Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program
Ryan Seacrest
Tom Bergeron
Heidi Klum
Jeff Probst
Phil Keoghan
Padma Lakshmi/Tom Colicchio
Commentary:  I will not recognize this category until Cat Deeley is nominated.  Travesty.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock
Jermaine Clement - Flight of the Conchords
Tony Shalhoub - Monk
Jim Parsons - Big Bang Theory
Steve Carrell - The Office
Charlie Sheen - Two and a Half Men
Commentary:  *Sigh*  Really?  Charlie Sheen and Tony Shalhoub?  Would have loved to see Lee Pace from Pushing Daisies and James Roday from Psych in the running.  I am excited about Jermaine getting some love.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Bryan Cranston - Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall - Dexter
Hugh Laurie - House
Gabriel Byrne - In Treatment
Jon Hamm - Mad Men
Simon Baker - The Mentalist
Commentary:  Knock off Hugh Laurie (I love House but this was not the best year) and Simon Baker and throw on Josh Holloway (he was fantastic this year) and EJO and you have yourself a race.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Tina Fey - 30 Rock
Christina Applegate - Samantha Who?
Julia Louis-Dreyfuss - The New Adventures of Old Christine
Sarah Silverman - The Sarah Silverman Program
Toni Collette - United States of Tara
Mary-Louise Parker - Weeds
Commentary:  I like all of these people.  The only one I could have seen added to this list is Portia de Rossi for Better Off Ted.  She is so great in that show.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Sally Field - Brothers and Sisters
Glenn Close - Damages
Mariska Hargitay - Law and Order: SVU
Elisabeth Moss - Mad Men
Holly Hunter -Saving Grace
Kyra Sedgewick - The Closer
Commentary:  How is Connie Britton never nominated?  She is the best part of Friday Night Lights and FNL is an outstanding show.  Also, and this will surprise some, Evangeline Lilly was really good this year.  Kate is annoying as hell but Evangeline plays her well.  And Mary McDonnell, well, she should have already won so…

Outstanding Reality-Competition Program
American Idol
Dancing with the Stars
Project Runway
Amazing Race
Top Chef
Commentary:  COME ON!  So You Think You Can Dance is so good.  I blame Mary Murphy for this.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Tracy Morgan - 30 Rock
Jack McBrayer - 30 Rock
Kevin Dillon - Entourage
Neil Patrick Harris - How I Met Your Mother
Rainn Wilson - The Office
John Cryer - Two and a Half Men
Commentary:  Enough with the Entourage and Two and a Half Men!  I am happy to finally see Tracy Morgan getting some credit.  He is hilarious.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Jane Krakowski - 30 Rock
Kristen Chenoweth - Pushing Daisies
Amy Poehler - Saturday Night Live
Kristin Wiig - Saturday Night Live
Vanessa Williams - Ugly Betty
Elizabeth Perkins - Weeds
Commentary:  Yay!  Jane Krakowski and Kristen Wiig.  Would have loved to see Andrea Anders for Better Off Ted on here.  And I think I would rather have seen Amy Poehler nominated for Parks and Recreation.  The show isn’t great but I really liked what she’s done on it.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Cherry Jones - 24
Rose Byrne - Damages
Sandra Oh - Grey’s Anatomy
Chandra Wilson - Grey’s Anatomy
Dianne Wiest - In Treatment
Hope Davis - In Treatment
Commentary:  I think this was the toughest category.  Any of the Big Love ladies would have been a good choice.  Rutina Wesley from Big Love is someone else I’d like to see get some credit.  And, of course, Elizabeth Mitchell!  She was so so good on Lost this year.

There were some other notable nominees.  Kathy Griffin got nominated a couple of times.  Battlestar was nominated for some writing and directing and cinematography and effects stuff.  Ricky Gervais was nominated for his comedy special and Dr. Horrible was as well.  SYTYCD was nominated four times for choreography.

I’m not HORRIBLY disappointed with the noms, I am just disheartened by some of these continual repeats.  I feel like there are really only about two slots up for grabs in each category every year.  The others are just auto-filled from year to year. I realllly thought they would throw BSG some Lord of the Rings style parting love this year.  Maybe that finale did them in.

Oh well, I’ll still watch the show.

Check out a complete list of nominees here.

Annoying social media

Facebook is annoying me lately. I never go to the site but my mom joined the other day so I logged on to tell her how to do something. I had like 50 various requests. About half the friend requests were from people I don’t want to add. The other various requests were for planting flowers or some crap. I just wanted an easy way to keep track with my friends. Why is Facebook so ridiculous now?

I use Twitter nearly exclusively now but that’s getting kind of annoying lately too. Who are all these people adding me? And what’s with the obvious blind adding to get the follower count up. I rarely choose to follow people. I pretty much only add people I know in real life or news type feeds. I don’t care how many followers I have so I’m never going to blindly add anyone.

Have you ever clicked on the trending topics and noticed how many blatantly idiotic people are on that site. Also, the spammers are outrageous.

I will keep using Twitter because it’s the easiest way to feel like I’m keeping up with my friends. But I really think I might ditch Facebook again (for the second time). I’ll never use MySpace.

Am I getting old?

In other news, Emmy noms out tomorrow. Here’s my snub predictions. I really hope I’m wrong about these. EJO, Mary McDonnell, Elizabeth Mitchell, Portia de Rossi, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Josh Holloway, Cat Deeley, Connie Brtton, Lee Pace, Anna Friel, Amanda Seyfried, Jeremy Davies, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Andrea Anders, Tracy Morgan, Battlestar, and Pushing Daisies.

I’m sure Tony Shaloub, Two and a Half Men, and some d-bag from Entourage will be nominated. Stupid Emmys.

Aliens are the new medical show

The trailer for NBC’s midseason drama Day One was leaked today. It’s hard to tell what’s really happening in the trailer and I can’t really tell if it actually looks good or not but…I might give it a try. Too much good stuff is happening midseason this year and frankly, my loyalties lie with Lost and V.

I really thought Day One was supposed to be a straight up disaster movie but it definitely looks like an invasion to me.

What happened to the days when being relegated to midseason was a bad thing? Now it seems to be where all the big budget shows go.

All I know is that when Day One gets canceled and the fans send in a million items tangentially related to a line one character said in passing to get the show renewed, they should actually watch it when it comes back.
